When to call Master on Bridge

Calling Master on Bridge


Officer on watch should immediately call Master on bridge if: 

  1. In case Restricted visibility is encountered or expected. (refer company SMS/Master standing order).
  2. In case Wind speed increases. (refer SMS/Master standing order).
  3. if any part of the passage plan is likely to take the vessel into/towards danger or any errors are noticed in the passage plan.
  4. Unable to execute the passage plan safely.
  5. Traffic conditions or movements of other vessels are causing concern.
  6. Difficulty is experienced in maintaining course.
  7. On failure to sight land, a navigation mark or to obtain soundings by the expected time.
  8. Unexpectedly, land or a navigation mark is sighted or a change in soundings occurs.
  9. At any time you suspect that the course steered or being made good is drawing the ship too near to land and/or danger.
  10. On breakdown of the engines, Black out, propulsion machinery remote controls, steering gear or any essential equipment, alarm or indicator.
  11. If any Navigational equipment malfunctions.
  12. If any Radio equipment malfunctions.
  13. On getting weather report about Heavy weather.
  14. If the ship meets any hazards to navigation, such as ice or a derelict or unidentified floating object.
  15. If a give way vessel is not giving way to own vessel and taking appropriate action in ample time in accordance with COLREGS.
  16. If Naval ship / men of war/ security enforcement agencies/vessels/aircrafts calls for information.
  17. On sighting/ hearing distress signals
  18. When personnel/ property are observed or known to be in distress.
  19. If Taking over officer is in your professional judgement is unfit to keep proper watch (e.g. fatigued, ill or drunk.)
  20. If instructed in Bridge/Night Orders,  passage plan, marking on chart or verbally.
  21. if two independent methods of position fixing show different positions, and the difference is beyond the expected accuracy of the fixing methods.
  22. if own vessel and another vessel is dragging or is suspected to be Dragging Anchor.
  23. If OOW is not satisficed with Pilot decisions, actions and/or  intentions and you are not satisfied with the explanation given by him.
  24. Closest point of approach (CPA) and time to closest point of approach (TCPA) of the target is not maintained.
  25. If OOW is not unable to comply with any SMS procedure(s), standing orders or bridge/ night orders, for whatever reasons.
  26. In any other Emergency.
  27. In any Doubt.
